2 + Colored Pencil A narrow, generally cylindrical implement for writing, drawing, or marking, consisting of a thin rod of graphite, colored wax, or similar substance encased in wood or held in a mechanical holder.

3 + What’s Inside? Prismacolor colored pencils are made up of: Pigment (color) Wax (for smooth application) Dried White Clay (for consistency) Secret Ingredients!

4 + Colored Pencil Techniques

5 + Remember… Colored pencils are NOT used like crayons! You should use your colored pencil as if you are painting with a pencil. -Start by “Blocking In” your “Local Colors” -Slowly use the techniques you’ve learned from drawing to build up your values. - Think of lights and darks, shape and form, and creating detail.

6 + Materials: Colored Pencils and… Illustration board : High quality drawing paper on a stiff backing. Can range from smooth to rough surfaces. Much more stable than paper

14 + Your Assignment: Colored Pencil Rendering of an Organic Subject Matter What is Organic Subject Matter? Subject matter that occurs naturally in our environment: Flowers, leaves, trees, plants, insects, fruits, vegetables, food, etc. Nothing man-made.

15 + Your Photo Reference Must Be… ORIGINAL – taken by you, or someone you know and used with their permission. COLORFUL – the more colorful the easier it will be. INTERESTING – both the subject matter and composition must be interesting.

16 + Your Photo Reference Must NOT Be… Anything man-made (buildings, bridges, etc.) Vast and expansive (landscapes, etc.) Of humans or pets (they are extremely difficult to do!)
