2 OBJECTIVES Understand how energy is involved in physical/chemical changes of matter. Become familiar with the law of conservation of energy. Understand the difference between heat and energy.

4 What is Energy? Energy is the capacity to do some type of work.

5 What is work? Moving an object Forming a new compound Generating light Converting food to usable energy Energy is used when there is any change in matter.

6 What are the two ways matter can change? PHYSICAL – no change in substance CHEMICAL – new substance is made

7 Matter Changes In order for anything to change, whether it is chemical or physical energy must be supplied. (Arrow Indicate Energy) ICE WATER BOILING WATER EVAPORATION

8 What are endothermic and exothermic processes? Endothermic- process in which heat is absorbed. Exothermic- process in which heat is released.

9 What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? The Law That States That Energy Cannot Be Created or Destroyed but can be changed from one form to another.

13 What are heat, temperature, and specific heat? Heat- the energy transferred between objects. Temperature- actual measurement of energy (heat), or how hot or cold something is. Specific heat- the relationship between the energy transferred to a substance and the substance’s temperature change.

14 What are temperature scales? Thermometers are used to measure temperature. Thermometers are marked with different temperature scales. 3 basic types: Kelvin, Celsius, Fahrenheit
