2 Instructions for Teacher In order to introduce this topic to the students, the teacher must bring the following TLM with him. Bar magnet, magnetic needle(compass), Iron powder, few papers, Drawing board, drawing pins, pencil, wire, fresh Dry cell, thick copper wire(10).

3 GENERAL OBJECTIVES 1. To enable them to know about the magnetic field & magnetic field lines. 2. To enable them how the current & magnetic fields are inter-related to each other. 3. To enable them to express their ideas independently without any hesitation. 4. To enable them to work in a group through learning by doing. 5. To enhance their scientific attitude & imagination power.

4 SPECFIC OBJECTIVES 1. To know how the magnetic compass works. 2. To know how the bar magnet looks like. 3. To know what are magnetic North & South poles. 4. To Know the directions of magnetic lines of forces using Flemings right hand thumb rule. 5. To know how to draw magnetic lines of forces using compass & iron powder.

6 MOTIVATION Indicate what the student must already know or be able to do in order to be successful with this lesson. (e.g. we have to ask questions related to the topic) 1 Have you ever seen the magnet? 2 what will happen if the magnet is brought near the iron nail ? 3 How many poles magnet have? 4 What is the direction of magnetic lines of forces (most of the students are unable to answer it )

7 MOTIVATION By reinforcing the students on giving correct response. By giving example related to our daily life experiences. By comparing the old and new knowledge.

8 INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE 1. We know that, whenever compass is brought near the magnet it gets deflected. In fact compass needle is small magnet whose north pole always points towards the geographic north while south pole indicates the geographic south in free space. 2. We also know that the similar poles of magnet repels each other while opposite poles attracts. 3. When we spread the iron powder on a paper around the bar magnet and tape (shake slowly) it, a particular design appears, as shown in figure,

10 INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE 4. The field around the bar magnet in which whose force is felt known as the magnetic field of that magnet and the lines which appears made up of iron powder is known as magnetic lines of forces. 5. Another way to draw the magnetic lines of forces is to place the bar magnet at the centre of the paper and by moving the magnetic compass around the bar magnet. The teacher will demonstrate it practically.

13 INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE 6. In 1820 AD Oersted found that when magnetic compass is placed near the current carrying conductor, compass needle gets deflected in a particular direction. 7. By changing the direction of the current the magnetic needle gets deflected in the opposite direction. 8. Teacher demonstrate it by doing practically.

15 INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES 9. Teacher will tell the student that in case of a bar magnet the magnetic lines of forces starts from north pole and ends to south pole in a closed loop. These magnetic lines are very close near the poles & they do not intersect each other, If they do that it means that there is two directions, which is not possible.

17 INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES 10. While in case of current carrying wire if we hold the wire in our left hand palm by pointing the thumb in the direction of the current, then the curled fingers will indicate the direction of magnetic lines of forces. This is Flemings right hand thumb rule. 11. Magnetic field intensity is measured in Oersted.

19 GROUP FORMATION & TASK Teacher will form the groups and provide them materials and equipments for activities. 1. Teacher will divide the students into four groups & give them following activities. 2. Group One-will demonstrate the magnetic field lines using iron powder & bar magnet.

20 GROUP FORMATION & TASK 3. Group Two- will demonstrate the magnetic field lines using compass & bar magnet. 4. Group three- will perform the Oersted experiment i.e. they will detect the deflection in compass needle near current currying conductor. 5. Group four- will tell the direction of magnetic field in a current carrying conductor using the Flemings right hand thumb Rule.

21 ASSESSMENT/ EVALUATION 1. Describe how you will determine the extent, to which student have attainted the institutional objectives. -by asking questions related to their task given to each group - By checking the level of performance of activity assigned to them. One student of each group will demonstrate the activity & other student will explain it. Teacher may ask some question related to the activity.

22 FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY Indicate how activities/materials will be used to reinforce and extent this lesson including home work /assignment. Teacher will check that how effectively the students have performed the experiment. He will give few questions for home work. 1. Write the properties of magnetic field lines. 2. How many poles a bar magnet have? 3. From where the magnetic lines of starts and end up? 4. What is Fleming right hand thumb rule? 5. Is The magnetic lines of force forms the close loop?
