With over 300 ethnic groups speaking 700 languages on more than 6,000 inhabited islands, the Indonesian archipelago is a showcase of cultural diversity.

5. Indonesian performance
Indonesian art forms are greatly influenced by religion. The famous dance dramas of Java and Bali are derived from Hindu mythology and often feature fragments from the Hindu epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata.

6. Orang-hutan; the forest people
The destruction of the tropical rain forest in Borneo and Sumatra is the main reason orang-utans are threatened with extinction. This has been caused by human activity such as illegal logging and the conversion of forest to palm oil plantations. Another cause is the large-scale fires facilitated by the El Nino weather phenomena. Additionally, the illegal animal trade has been a factor in the decline of wild orangutan populations.

8. School in Indonesia
The school year begins in July and most schools run from Monday to Saturday every week. Every morning lessons begin at seven and finish at around one.

The becak is a small-scale local means of transport; it is also known by a variety of other names such as bike taxi, velotaxi, pedicab, bikecab, cyclo, trisikad, or trishaw.

Indonesia is one of the world's leading rice producers, with paddy production in 2003 of more than 50 million tonnes. Indonesians are also big consumers of rice, averaging more than 200 kg per head each year.

13. Market day
Markets in Indonesia are very colourful and crowded places. The vendors arrive early in the morning to set up their goods. Banana leaves are used on trays to display different foods. Women usually sell a range of fresh foods such as chillis, onions, fruit, rice, spices, dried fish, rice cakes, flowers or even freshly cooked foods. Men usually sell live chickens, ducks, goats, pigs or tools. Everywhere in the market, drinks and snack foods can be bought.

14. Religions of Indonesia
The majority (about 88%) of the population follows Islam. In fact Indonesia is the nation with largest Muslim population. However, freedom of religion is provided by the Indonesian Constitution, which is defined in the First Principle of the State Philosophy' "Pancasila", which upholds a "Belief in One Supreme God". Others religions followed in Indonesia are Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism.

15. Candi Borobudur
Borobudur temple is one of the seven wonders of the world as it is the largest Buddhist temple and was built in around 800AD. As Islam spread through Java the temple was forgotten and became overgrown with vines however a Dutch historian found records of the site which he found and began the tremendous task of uncovering it.
