PSSD Numeracy Project 2013-14

PSSD Numeracy Goals Staff in Prairie Spirit are participating in a listen and learn year, finding out more about numeracy programs in our schools so that we might better align approaches across the division. By the end of 2014, 50% of the K-8 schools in the division will have used a diagnostic tool to assess their students’ numeracy skills. By the end of June 2014, 40% of teaching staff will participate in collaborative professional learning.

Process to date (Strengths) Reviewed Divisional School Plans (areas of focus include basic facts, mental math, and problem solving) Create a tool to build a school profile, based on research Met with individual school principals who indicated a numeracy goal on their school plan Discussed current practices Discussed numeracy resources and shared new resources Reviewed the numeracy profile form Lesson Study Manitou Elementary School Prairie Mountain Elementary St. Claude Complex

Challenges and Next Steps Continue to develop and research appropriate diagnostic numeracy tools Support schools based on the feedback from schools (school profile) Implement diagnostic tools and analyze their effectiveness Continue to promote professional practice that includes collaborative planning and discussions to improve student learning and engagement
