Purpose of Worship Matthew 22:37-38
2
Matthew 22:37-38 – “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
3
Psalm 46:10 – “Be still and know that I am God”
4
Revelation 4:11 – “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
5
Worship involves two things: Worship is my response to God’s love Worship is giving back to God
6
Romans 12:1,2 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
7
God wants you to love Him in three ways: Thoughtfully – Love Him with your mind Passionately – With all your heart and soul Practically – Love Him with all your strength
8
I.Worship is Focusing My Attention on God Psalm 139:1-3 – “O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me, Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways”
9
I.Worship is Focusing My Attention on God Two things distract us from focusing on God: We are self-centered by nature We live in a self-centered culture Romans 8:7,8 – “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”
10
I.Worship is Focusing My Attention on God How can we bring God into focus? Establish a daily quiet time with God Develop a constant conversation with God Isaiah 26:3 – “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
11
II.Worship is Expressing My Affection to God I John 4:19 – “We love Him, because He first loved us.” How can I express my affection to God? You can start by saying thank you You can start by singing in your heart You can start by giving your life to Him
12
III.Worship is Using My Abilities for God God wants us to see Him with our minds God wants us to sense Him with our heart and soul God wants us to serve Him with all your strength Colossians 3:23 – “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men”
13
What are you worshiping? Whatever you are giving your attention to Whatever you are giving your affection to Whatever you are giving your abilities to
