6 10GE LANPHY testing #1 ● 10GE LANPHY is a new type of the interface card for Nortel OME platform, the general availability is in the first quarter of 2007. The card will provide: ● VCAT capacity, can be sub-rated down to STS3c ● 2 x 10GbE LANPHY ports ● The early deployment card is now available. CANARIE will purchase three cards for testing. Nortel will replace them once the general availability of the card is released. ● It will support only ● one GE LANPHY port and ● sub-rated down to STS3c-32V (5G).

7 10GbE LANPHY testing #2 ● VCAT support give us the ability to utilize the SONET circuit efficiently. ● For examples ● McGill Ultra video conferencing – require only 5G but take up a whole 10G circuit ● TRIUMF would have a 5G LP to CERN, multiple 1G to tier 2 site

8 Eastern ROADM project >Eastern ROADM – in partnership with ORANO – Chicago – Windsor/Detroit – Toronto – Ottawa – Montréal – Albany – Boston – NYC – 20 year IRU from Level3 on Chicago to Detroit and Toronto to NYC fibre pair – 14 year IRU from TELUS on Detroit to Toronto fibre pair – 34 equipment sites – Nortel CPL (Common Photonic Layer), 50GHz spacing, C-band, qty72 10G channel capacity

9 Western ROADM project >Western ROADM – in partnership with BCNET and NETERA – Seattle – Victoria – Vancouver – Kamloops – Kelowna – Calgary – 12 year IRU from Bell Canada on entire route – 20 equipment sites – Nortel CPL (Common Photonic Layer), 50GHz spacing, C-band, qty72 10G channel capacity

10 Why are we doing this? >LightPath allocations highest on following segments – Vancouver-Calgary – Chicago – Toronto, Toronto – Ottawa, Ottawa – Montréal – Toronto – NYC >Low cost ROADM technology – low marginal cost of adding wavelengths – low OPEX relative to other DWDM technologies >Great opportunity to lay longer term CAnet foundation – Eastern: expiry of Level(3) Fiber Co. deak in March 2006 – Western: Bell willing to closely match Fiber Co. pricing >Wavelength insertion/extraction right at the campus
