3 Salt on a Bird’s Tail: A Swedish Fairy Tale Comprehension Skill: Drawing Conclusions Why does Olle want to put salt on magpie’s tail? What can you tell about Olle from what he does to get the shiny little knife? Why does the magpie ask Olle to get her the items that he wants himself?

7  chores: small jobs usually done on a regular schedule

9  hitched: tied on or fastened by a knot, ring, or hook

10  plow: to break up and turn over dirt so that seeds can be planted

11  sown: scattered or planted

12  tended: look after; took care of

13 Predict and Infer  I can predict what happens as the dragon grows up. I can infer from the cover that the dragon is young at the beginning. I think that a dragon would be harder to raise as they get older.

14 Drawing Conclusions I can use story details to figure out something the author does not state directly by constructing a graphic organizer of conclusions.

23 Suffixes –y and -ly  A suffixes is added to the end of a base word. Carefully I rolled the egg into the cave. He did have a healthy appetite! -ly means “in a certain way” -y means “full of”
