There’s been a murder

Inspired by morph.. Follow the instructions on the worksheet

What it could/should look like…

What’s the point in a starter? Starters can have a number of purposes… – To ‘hook’ – capture the students attention – To settle – useful depending on the class and where they may have come from – To recap – consolidate the previous lessons learning – To ‘kick’ the learning cycle – to ensure a quick, efficient start to the lesson

Debunking the myth A starter can be as long or as short as you want 2 minutes is fine as is 20 minutes Recap of the previous lesson can be shorter starters If you want to introduce some new material then longer starters are fine as you can show learning in that period

Task On the A3 paper create a list of ten starters that you have used or seen others use Then identify which three you think were the most effective and explain why

My favourite starters Dead person Mock the week Collaborative sorting starters Mary Poppins bag Play dough Videos

What’s the point…another silly game sir!! Plenaries or the act of recapping the learning is probably the most important part of the lesson Again like starters they can be broken into different categories – To reflect on a personal level – Demonstrative – Fully inclusive

Task On the A3 paper create a list of ten plenaries that you have used or have seen used by other teachers Then identify which three you think were the most effective and explain why

To reflect on a personal level To get the pupils to think about their learning in the lesson – Write down three things you have learnt this lesson – 2 things you have learnt and one question – Pyramid One question you want to ask Two things you already knew Three things you have learnt today

Demonstrative People should demonstrate their learning with minimal input from the teacher – Speed dating – Variety of beach ball activities (hot potato) – Post-it note challenges

Fully inclusive This is a bit more teacher-led but very effective in showing what the pupils have learnt – Mini-whiteboards – Targeted questioning – Beat the teacher

Using mini-whiteboards most effectively Make a list of five ways that you can think of or have seen mini-whiteboards being used effectively in lessons

Using mini-whiteboards most effectively Always plan the questions first Make sure all pupils have time to answer – Basic question and answers – Get the students to create the questions – Drawing of diagrams – Work in pairs/groups – If this is the answer what is the question – Make a list of different river processes…..then explain one/draw a diagram showing it – The teacher can always join in

Something to ponder… Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing. Denis Waitley

Goodies time The booklet I have given contains all the material presented to you Also within in that are a variety of tricks, tips and activities that I have picked up over the last five years
