4. Despite some victories against segregation African Americans remained second-class citizens to many white Americans, especially in the South. 1955- Emmett Till- a 14 year old boy from Chicago was murdered in the South

5. Emmett Till Murder Having grown up in the North Till did not know the South’s strict racial etiquette. He was in Mississippi visiting his uncle. Him and some friends went to the store and Till supposedly asked the women running the store for a date.

6. Four days later the women’s husband and his half brother kidnapped Till in the middle of the night. They beat and shot him and then tossed his body in the river. National reports of Till’s murder got angered many Americans.

7. Trial The men stood trial for the crime but a jury of 12 white men found them not guilty. This opened up many Americans eyes to the racism and violence African Americans faced in the South
