Why survey care home residents? The Seniors Forums are two of seven which make up East Sussex Seniors Association (ESSA) ESSA is the combined voice of seniors living in the county

Why survey care home residents? Aims of the survey: To give care home residents a voice To promote membership of the Seniors Forums

What did we do? Developed a survey that asked about key aspects of care home life Contacted care home managers to ask them to take part Gave out packs of surveys and information leaflets to managers Collected in all completed surveys

What did we do? Collated all the results to create a Summary Report Produced an individual report for each care home with their results Shared the Summary Report with the care homes, East Sussex County Council and LINk

What did we ask? How comfortable their care home is, Whether they can talk to staff about their needs, Whether staff act upon their requests, Whether any complaints have been dealt with,

What did we ask? For their views on choice and control, meals, activities and visitors, What they like and don’t like, and What they would change.

Who took part? 18 care homes took part 119 residents completed a survey Some people were helped to take part by family (32 people), friends (8 people) and staff (32 people)

What did we learn? 97% of residents are very satisfied or satisfied with their care home 99% say their care home is a comfortable place to live 96% say they can talk to staff about their needs

What did we learn? Over three quarters say that staff always listen and act when they ask for a change in their care Just under a quarter said staff sometimes listen

What did we learn? Staff in particular are praised, with 47 people saying the thing they like most about their care home is the staff

What did we learn? 14% said they had made a complaint in the last year The majority had their complaint dealt with, although 3 people said it hadn’t been

Areas for improvement Getting people more involved in planning their own care When asked if staff listen and act when they ask for a change in their care 23% said they don’t and 5% disagree that they have a say in the planning of their care

Areas for improvement Giving people more chance to take part in activities outside their care home 7% say they don’t have the option and the percentage who strongly agree (36%) is noticeably lower

Areas for improvement Improve the food on offer Although the number of people who scored the food negatively was quite low there were quite a few people (5) who said the food was the thing they liked the least about their care home

Conclusions? Overall, the responses are very positive Residents who took part are generally happy with their care homes and the support provided
