10.4 Images in Convex Mirrors Copyright © 2010 McGraw-Hill Ryerson Ltd. Convex mirrors are mirrors with reflective surfaces that bulge or curve outwards. (Page 431)

Distortion of Images in Curved Mirrors Copyright © 2010 McGraw-Hill Ryerson Ltd. The images seen in curved mirrors sometimes seem distorted. This effect is called spherical aberration. It describes irregularities in an image in a curved mirror that result when reflected rays from the outer parts of the mirror do not go through the focal point. Scientists have found that a concave mirror in the shape of a parabola eliminates spherical aberration. (Page 428)

Concave Convex “converging” mirror “diverging” mirror

Properties of Convex Mirrors Copyright © 2010 McGraw-Hill Ryerson Ltd. When parallel rays of light hit a convex mirror, the reflected rays travel out and away from each other—they diverge. The focal point is located behind the mirror. Like concave mirrors, convex mirrors have spherical aberration with only a small, centre region giving non-distorted images. (Page 432)

Convex Mirrors Produces a virtual image that is ALWAYS upright and smaller than the object

Ray Diagrams for Convex Mirrors Ray 1: travels from the top of the object, parallel to the principal axis and reflects through the focal point

Ray Diagrams for Convex Mirrors Ray 2: travels from the top of the object, towards the focal point and reflects parallel to the principal axis

Ray Diagrams for Convex Mirrors Ray 3 “Check ray”: travels towards the centre of curvature and will reflect back on itself

Ray Diagrams for Convex Mirrors The image appears where the (virtual) reflected rays appear to intersect

Remember: The image for a convex mirror is always virtual, upright and smaller!
