It is not the man of great native talent who wins but he who pushes his talent, however small, to it’s utmost capacity.

Science Paper BooBoos These are actual quotes from submissions to science teachers "When you breath, you inspire. When you do not breath, you expire.“ "H2O is hot water, and CO2 is cold water" "When you smell an oderless gas, it is probably carbon monoxide“ "Water is composed of two gins, Oxygin and Hydrogin. Oxygin is pure gin. Hydrogin is gin and water."

Is It what you think?

Balancing Equations Part 2
5
Types of Chemical reactions: Synthesis or combination reaction - the combining of two or more reactants to form one product. Ex: A + B ---> AB Ex: 2H 2 + O 2 ----> 2H 2 O
6
Decomposition reaction - the breaking apart of one compound into two or more simpler substances. Ex: AB ---> A + B Ex: NH 4 NO 3 ----> N 2 O + 2H 2 O
7
Single Replacement - One element takes the place of another in a compound. Ex: AX + B ---> A + BX Ex: Fe + CuSO 4 ----> FeSO 4 + Cu (Iron is more reactive than copper so reaction takes place.)
9
The Following chart list the metal reactivity. (See next slide) Note: Li is the most reactive and Gold the least active.
10
Metal Activity Chart Li K Ba Sr Ca Na Mg Al Mn Zn Cr Most Active Fe Cd Co Ni Sn Pb H Cu Bi Sb Hg Ag Pt Au Least Active
11
Double Replacement - Two compounds exchanging partners. Ex: AX + BY -----> BX + AY Ex: FeSO 4 + CaCl 2 ------> FeCl 2 + CaSO 4
13
Combustion Reaction - one of the reactants is oxygen and the two products are water and carbon dioxide. Ex: CH 4 (g) + 2O 2 (g) ----> CO 2 (g) + 2H 2 O(g)

17
Balance the following equations and then tell what type of reaction they are.
18
Problem: 1. Carbon monoxide reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide. 2. Silver reacts with Chlorine what is the product?
19
Answers They are both synthesis
20
Problem: 3. Magnesium oxide reacts with Iron to produce Iron II oxide and magnesium. 4. Propane reacts with oxygen in to produce water and carbon dioxide.
21
Answers 3. Single replacement 4. Combustion reaction
22
Problem: 5. Barium chloride reacts with sodium phosphate to form barium phosphate and sodium chloride. 6. Potassium chlorate decomposes into potassium chloride and oxygen.
23
Answers: 5. Double Replacement 6. Decompositions reaction
24
Will the following reactions occur? If so balance. 7. LiCl combines with Strontium 8. Gold I Chloride combines with Barium
25
Answers 7. No : Lithium is more reactive than strontium. 8. Yes: because Barium is more reactive than Gold.
