Double-Replacement Rxns Two compounds are mixed together and switch metal ions to form two new compounds as products. When the reaction works, a precipitate forms. Generic Equation: AX + BY AY + BX [http://www.sfrisch.com/images/chem_cov.jpg] Click here for a Video Demonstration

Double-Replacement Rxns AgNO 3 (aq) + KCl (aq) Ag +1 and Cl -1 K +1 and NO 3 -1 AgCl+ KNO 3 Equation is already balanced, but what states are the products in?
3
Double-Replacement Rxns Must use solubility table to determine if either product will precipitate (solid!).
4
Nitrate (NO 3 -1 ) is in KNO 3 Soluble, which means no precipitate. AgNO 3 (aq) + KCl (aq) AgCl+ KNO 3 (aq)
5
Chloride (Cl -1 ) is in AgCl Soluble, but Ag is an exception: precipitate! AgNO 3 (aq) + KCl (aq) AgCl+ KNO 3 (aq)(s)
6
Double-Replacement Rxns Na 2 CO 3 (aq) + AlCl 3 (aq) Al +3 and CO 3 +2 Na +1 and Cl -1 Al 2 CO 3 + NaCl Balance!!! 263 Now find the states of your products…..
7
Chloride (Cl -1 ) is in NaCl Soluble, which means no precipitate. Na 2 CO 3 (aq) + AlCl 3 (aq) Al 2 CO 3 + NaCl 263 (aq)
8
Carbonate (CO 3 -2 ) is in Al 2 CO 3 Insoluble, (no exceptions) means precipitate! Na 2 CO 3 (aq) + AlCl 3 (aq) Al 2 CO 3 + NaCl 263 (aq) (s) Click here to go to the Live Chem virtual reactions webpage.

Combustion Reactions A hydrocarbon is usually burned with Oxygen gas to produce Carbon Dioxide & Water. Example: CH 4 + 2 O 2 CO 2 + 2 H 2 O
