LEARNING TO DYE FLY TYING MATERIALS WITH THE PCFA FEBRUARY 14, 2013 DYING TO TIE
2
WHY DO WE DYE OUR OWN MATERIALS? CUSTOM COLOURS LIMITED ACCESS TO MATERIALS MAKING IT BETTER USING YOUR OWN MATERIALS DYING TO TIE
3
WHAT YOU WILL NEED. MOST IMPORTANT, A NOTE PAD WATER DYE ACID A POT HEAT SOURCE PPE TIMER DYING TO TIE
4
CLEANING SUBSTRATES FOR DYEING DIIFICULTIES IN DYEING CAN ARISE IF THE WRONG CLEANING AGENT IS USED. HOUSE HOLD DETERGENTS ARE NOT WELL SUITED FOR DYEING. THEY HAVE POOR WETTING PROPERTIES, AND CONTAIN OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS. TWO GOOD CLEANING AGENTS ARE VENPOL AND SYNTHRAPOL. DYING TO TIE
5
HOW TO CLEAN USE A RATIO OF 1 TABLESPOON TO 1 QUART HOT WATER AND SOAK YOUR SUBSTRATE FOR A FEW HOURS. IF YOU ARE DEALING WITH BLOOD YOU CAN ALSO ADD ½ CUP OF 3% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. MIX AROUND EVERY SO OFTEN AND THEN RINSE IN A SOLUTION OF SYNTHRAPOL AND WARM WATER AT A RATIO OF ½ TEASPOON TO 1 QUART DYING TO TIE
6
WHAT ARE WE DYEING? FUR, FEATHERS HAIR AND WOOL. THESE ARE ALL MADE OF PROTEINS THAT ARE RICH IN SULFUR-CONTAINING AMINO ACIDS. ALKALINE DYE BATHS WILL DISSOLVE THESE AND GIVE OFF HYDROGEN SULFIDE (H 2 S). FOR THIS REASON WE MUST USE AN ACID DYE. DYING TO TIE
7
ACID DYE BATH RATIO THIS IS ADEQUATE FOR ONE FULL NECK, SADDLE OR MEDIUM BUCK TAIL. YOU CAN INCREASE THE BATH SIZE PROPORTIONATELY. 6 CUPS WATER ½ TEASPOON ACID ¼ TEASPOON SYNTHRAPOL ¼ TEASPOON DYE DYING TO TIE
8
MIX YOUR BATH EXCEPT FOR THE DYE. ALLOW THE MATERIALS TO SOAK AND WET OUT THOROUGHLY. WHILE YOU ARE DOING THIS MIX THE DYE WITH 2 TABLESPOONS OF HOT WATER AND MIX INTO THE BATH WHILE STIRRING. HEAT THE BATH TO JUST BELOW A SIMMER AND SWIRL THE CONTENTS FROM TIME TO TIME. ONCE YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THE COLOUR AND ALLOW THE SUBSTRAE TO COOL BEFORE RINSING. DRY YOUR FEATHERS. DYING TO TIE
9
REMEMBER TO KEEP GOOD NOTES SO THAT YOU CAN OBTAIN CONSISTANT RESULTS AND AVOID REPEATED MISTAKES. DYING TO TIE
