5. APEC 2007 Canada Rural Wind Energy Projects 1.Recent commissioning of 84 – 1.25 MW turbines.

6. APEC 2007 Canada 1989, Northland Power developed a combined cycle power generating plant in Northern Ontario. Total power capacity of 102 MW, with the majority of power coming from 3 gas turbines while 17 MW comes from a wood waste fired steam plant. KMW developed a conceptual design to fit the budget, which resulted in 3 shop assembled and shop tested combustion and boiler modules. KMW was contracted to engineer, design and supply the wood waste fired combustion systems for this project. This innovative design, the first of its kind in North America, proved to be very successful. Consuming 720 tons per day. Kirkland Lake Power Project

8. APEC 2007 Canada Village Located in Northern Quebec with a unique heating system designed by KMW. All heat consumers from houses, school, medical clinic to band office are connected to the central heating plant. System equipped with a 1 MW Wood Fired Energy System installed in 1992. In 1998 a second Energy System was added producing 1.7 MW heat capacity. During summer months smaller boiler will carry the heat demand and in the winter months both boilers work together providing enough heat for the entire village. At peak demand the 2 boilers consume approx. 25 tons of sawdust per day, which is bought from a local sawmill. Ouje Bougoumou Cree Nation

APEC 2007 Canada Recent Policy Announcements 1.Renewable fuel requirement:  Gasoline sold in Canada must contain 5% ethanol by 2010, for a total of 2.1 BL Yr -1.  Diesel fuel and heating oil must be blended with 2% biodiesel by 2012 for a total of 600 ML Yr -1 2.Current production capacity of existing Canadian plants and those under construction is about 865 million litres of ethanol and 56 million of biodiesel a year.

APEC 2007 Canada Recent Policy Announcements 1.Capital Formation Assistance Program:  $200 M over 4 years in the form of repayable grants towards construction costs.  Federal funds will match farmer investment up to 25% of total capital cost to a maximum of $25 million per project. In practice it should mean that a farmer-sponsored project can easily proceed once equity of 20 to 25% of the project cost has been raised. 2.ABIP: $145 million in research money over five years for biomass technology including biofuels and other bioproducts. 3.Total biofuel support (federal, Ontario, and Alberta): $1.5 B.

12. APEC 2007 Canada Summary 1.Current government has moved away from Kyoto. 2.Much of the growth in renewable energy will be part of a “Clean Air” program. 3.Many of the initiatives are operated through Natural Resources Canada.
