Lee Evans Partnership LLP St. Mary the Virgin Church, Ashford 16 th September 2014 By John Minter and Patrick Osborne

Lee Evans Partnership LLP St. Mary the Virgin Church, Ashford 16 th September 2014 1.The need for refurbishment 2.St. Mary’s before refurbishment 3.Systems installed 4.Monitoring In Use 5.Lessons Learnt and Future Work

Lee Evans Partnership LLP The need for refurbishment Buildings are responsible for around 40% of the UK’s GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions There are 1.8 million non-domestic buildings, built at or below current building regulations. These will most likely still be in use in 2050, if not later

Lee Evans Partnership LLP The need for refurbishment There are 374,000 Listed buildings in England, and for refurbishment there are associated risks: Historical Significance Archaeology Moisture

Lee Evans Partnership LLP St. Mary’s before refurbishment Consuming 200,000kWh a year for heating Hot water provided by local electric hot water heaters Inefficient lighting system Inefficient boilers - on cold days could only get the church 14°C, and cost £9,500 a year in gas bills Approximate Carbon footprint 38.8 tonnes of CO 2 per year

Lee Evans Partnership LLP St. Mary’s before refurbishment

Lee Evans Partnership LLP Measures installed Low Carbon systems include: GSHP bore holes Rainwater harvesting LED Lighting Innovative underfloor heating system Predicted to lead to a Carbon footprint reduction of 33% (to 26.1 tonnes per year)

Lee Evans Partnership LLP GSHP

Lee Evans Partnership LLP GSHP

Lee Evans Partnership LLP Lighting Low Energy Lighting including LED flood lights

Lee Evans Partnership LLP Underfloor heating system

Lee Evans Partnership LLP Boiler Room Dimplex SI24TE Brine/Water Heat Pump New Potteron Derwent Compact Plus boiler Kamstrup Multical 402 Meter

Lee Evans Partnership LLP Monitoring in use Sub metering of the GSHP Increased use of the space as a venue means it is difficult to compare the before and after Total emissions after refurbishment equate to 39.7 tonnes per year Feedback from the client suggests that the space can be kept at a comfortable temperature, whilst before the heating system was inadequate

Lee Evans Partnership LLP Lessons learnt and future work Radial GSHP bores allow difficult sites to have low carbon heating The LED lighting is particularly successful – saving money and energy Reviewing systems is important to ensure CO 2 savings are realised Further monitoring of the delivered temperature for the underfloor heating is proposed for Winter 2014
