Happy Monday 1. Open study guides to page 184 and reread the notes you took on Friday. – *Pay careful attention to the first section about the Palmer Raids. That will be our primary focus today!*

USA PATRIOT Act Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism. Passed after the 9/11 attacks in NYC & Washington, DC in 2001. Gives government more power to monitor and survey the actions of the American people without going through the process of getting warrants. Some argue it violates the 4 th Amendment. – “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” In readings today… – FOIA=Freedom of Information Act – “Gag order” – order to remain silent – NSL – National Security Letter: official gov’t request of records – “Telephone calling records” – gov’t has access to calls you’ve made/received, but contrary to popular opinion, doesn’t listen in on those conversations. What about text messages & emails? Read on.
