1 Investigating the relationship between speed, time and distance
Domino Dash Investigating the relationship between speed, time and distance

2 Flash Back: Friday, Oct. 26 1. What is the relationship between padding, time and the force of impact? (Think about our Egg Drop activity) a.) padding increases the force, which reduces the time b.) padding increases the time of the impact, which decreases the force c.) padding increases the inertia of the car 2. Find the force that a baseball would hit the bat with if it had an acceleration of 62 m/s 2 and a mass of 3 kg. a.) 181 N b.) 186 N c.) 190 N 3. Find the mass of a baseball if it hit a bat with a force of 42 N and an acceleration of 6 m/s 2 . a.) 5 kg b.) 6 kg c.) 7 kg

3 Flash Back : Monday, Oct. 29 1.) How do you solve for average speed? a. Divide speed by time b. Divide distance by time c. Multiply distance by time 2.) What is the average speed of a line of dominoes that is 30 cm, and took 2 seconds to fall ? a. 10 cm/s b. 60 cm/s c. 15 cm/s 3.) What is the average speed of a line of dominoes that is 85 cm, and took 5 seconds to fall ? a. 17 cm/s b. 18 cm/s c. 20 cm/s

4 Flash Back : Monday, Oct. 29 1.) How do you solve for average speed? a. Divide speed by time b. Divide distance by time c. Multiply distance by time 2.) What is the average speed of a line of dominoes that is 85 cm, and took 5 seconds to fall ? a. 17 cm/s b. 18 cm/s c. 20 cm/s

5 Background Information:
Average Speed is the rate of motion calculated by dividing the distance traveled by the amount of time it takes to travel that distance. s = average speed, d =distance, and t = time, Avg. speed = total distance traveled travel time

6 Back Ground Info. (cont.)
Equation: S = d t Average speed is calculated by dividing distance by time, so its units will always be a distance unit divided by a time unit. So, what would the unit for avg. speed be for this investigation?

7 Back Ground Info. (cont.)
Unit for average speed is: cm/sec

8 STEP 1 1.)Set up all 28 dominoes with equal spacing between them. Put the dominoes in a straight line. 2.)Next, measure the length of the domino row. Record this data in the table.

9 STRAIGHT LINE

10 STEP 2 3.) Use the stopwatch to measure the time it takes for the entire row of dominoes to fall after the first domino is pushed. Record the data. 4.) Calculate the speed at which the dominoes fell. Record. Avg. speed = total distance traveled travel time

11 STEP 3 5.) Set up another row of a different length. Repeat steps 3 – 4. 6.) Repeat for a total of 7 different trials.

12 STEP 4 Graph for home work!!!

13 Before we begin… Inventory your groups basket;
-ensure you have: a calculator a stop watch a set of dominoes a ruler 2. Count your dominoes, and compare your count to the post-it note in your group’s basket. 3. Stay on task, or you will be assigned book work.

14 If dominoes keep falling, I will help
If dominoes keep falling, I will help. If the line of dominoes stops mid fall, need to stop watch, then start again and add times.
