Nonpublic Schools NOTE! You still must maintain your certificate active and valid by paying the registration fee in order to renew. Illinois School Counselor Association
4
OR What do I have to do? 2 ways to renew your Type-73

5
CPDUs? Continuing Professional Development Units
Unit of measurement used by ISBE to award credit of participation in a broad range of activities. Various activities to earn CPDUs (see matrix) Attending workshops, conferences, etc. 1 CPDU = 1 hour of attendance 5 hour workshop (not including lunch)= 5 CPDUs Must be offered by an approved provider Illinois School Counselor Association
6
Examples of Activities
Supervising an Intern: Up to 30 CPDUs per renewal period Completed College Coursework : 15 CPDUs/ sem hr Curriculum Development/Assessment: Up to 11 CPDUs/ sem Participate on improvement/planning committee: up to 8 CPDUs/ sem *Be sure you have all required documents needed for proof of evidence! 7
Purpose of CPDUs Advance both knowledge & skills consistent with IL Standards endorsed in. Develop knowledge & skills in areas determined by State Board of Education to be critical for school service personnel. Address knowledge, skills, goals of your local improvement plan. Address the needs of serving students with disabilities, including adapting & modifying clinical/professional practices to meet the need of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. Illinois School Counselor Association
8
What about CEs and CEUs? CEs are used by the State of Illinois for licensure. e.g. LPC would collect CEs. CEUs are used at some conferences and equate to 5 hours of attendance for every 1 CEU. Both CEs and CEUs CANNOT be transferred/converted into CPDUs! Illinois School Counselor Association
9
Approved Providers Workshops and conferences only count towards CPDUs if the provider is recognized by ISBE. Some approved providers include: IMHCA, ISCA, and ICA. A full list is on Educator Certification Systems website: Illinois School Counselor Association
10
When do I need to start counting?
Right now! (As of July 1, 2008) Proportionally Reduced if your certificate is still active: 16 CPDUs/year Example of someone renewing in July 2011: : 3 years 80 CPDUs / 3 years = 48 CPDUs Illinois School Counselor Association
11
What about Part-Time Employment?
The # of CPDUs needed to renew can be reduced by 50% for any amount during the certificate-holder has been employed and performing services on a part-time basis. CPDUs Needed When Active Validity Cycle Per Year Per Semester Full Time 80 CPDUs CPDUs 8 CPDUs Part Time 40 CPDUs CPDUs 4 CPDUs Illinois School Counselor Association Illinois School Counselor Association
12
CPDU Reduction Continued
Example: If you are .50 FTE during all 5 years of the renewal period then you would be required to complete 50% of CPDUs required or 40 CPDUs. For each semester you are not employed (inactive) you subtract that semester’s CPDUs e.g. unemployed 1.5 years. Subtract 24 CPDUS from total 80 Proportionate rate only relevant if using CPDU renewal option Illinois School Counselor Association
13
Certificate Status & Renewing
Status of your certificate is important during renewal Valid & Active: You are currently employed Valid & Exempt: Not currently working/employed Changing your status Done online at ECS under EXEMPTIONS Enter/review your exemptions Modify Exemption Status Indicate which semester are active and which are exempt Provide reason for exemption Then submitted to the ROE and approved/denied Illinois School Counselor Association
14
What if I hold two certificates?
When two certificates are being used at the same time, the certificate used for 50% or more of the school day determines the continuing professional development requirements you complete. Examples: 60% day Student Service & 40% day teaching: - Complete Student Service Personnel requirements 50% day Administration & 50% day Student Service: - You choose which certificate to renew 40% day Student Service & 60% day teaching - Complete teaching requirements Illinois School Counselor Association Illinois School Counselor Association
