2.6 Ratios, Rates, and Conversions
I can find ratios and rates and convert units and rates.
2
Ratio Compares two numbers by division Can be written 3 ways
π π a:b a to b For every a units of one quantity, you have b units of another quantity. Ex: if the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 2:1, then the number of boys is two times the number of girls
3
Rate A ratio that compares quantities measured with different units
A rate with a denominator of 1 is called a unit rate per 1 unit of measurement.
4
Comparing Unit Rates Write each price as a ratio.
Then write each unit rate. Store C offers the best deal because it has the smaller unit rate.
5
Converting Units Multiply by the conversion factor
A ratio of two equivalent measures in different units. Ex: 12 ππ 1 ππ‘ Write the conversion factor so that desired units are in the numerator and original units are in the denominator.
6
Practice 330 min; hours 330 πππβ 1 β 60 πππ Divide out common units
Simplify 330 β 60 =5.5 β
7
You try! 15 kg; grams 5 ft 3 in; inches 1250 cm; meters
8
Unit Analysis Notice that units for each quantity are included in the calculations to help determine units for the answer. Also called dimensional analysis
9
Converting Rates Because rates involve two different units, you must multiply by two conversion factors. Ex: converting miles per hour to feet per second.
10
You try! A student ran the 50 yd dash in 5.8 s. At what speed did the student run in miles per hour? round to the tenth. 17.6 mi/h
