1 Navigating the Nation’s Busy Airspace
Andy Marosvari NATCA National Safety Committee Boise ATCT May 22, 2013 Introduction

2 On the Ground Get the current ATIS or have the weather
Clearance Delivery- be ready for the clearance Ground Control- Who, Where, and What Carry an airport diagram and use it! Limit distractions while taxiing out If you don’t know where you are or where you are going…STOP and ask Readback ALL hold short instructions Every runway crossing will be specific * * If the runways are too close together or thresholds come together, an aircraft can be cleared to cross and takeoff

3 Phraseology Clearance Delivery
Boise Clearance, N9470N, with Information A, VFR to EUL N9470N, Boise Clearance, departure frequency 119.6, squawk 0321 Departure frequency 119.6, squawk 0321, N9470N

4 Phraseology Getting to the runway: Repositioning on the field
Boise ground, N9470N at the white hangers, ready to taxi with Information A N9470N, Boise ground, RWY 28L taxi via J,F,B Repositioning on the field Boise ground, N9470N, at the white hangers, reposition to Jackson Jet Center N9470N, Boise ground, taxi via J, cross RWY 28L and the approach end of RWY 10L to A, taxi via A to Jackson Jet Getting from the runway: Boise ground, N9470N, clear of RWY 28L at E, taxi to the white hangers N9470N, taxi to the white hangers via B, F, J

5 Taxiway Markings HOLD SHORT ENHANCED TAXIWAY ILS CRITICAL AREA
Know your pavement markings “dash across the dashes” Enhanced taxiway lines lead to runways ILS Critical area- hold there when the weather is less than 2 or less than 800 ILS CRITICAL AREA

6 On the Runway Be ready to go when you call
LUAW-Line up and Wait-same as Position and Hold Always check the final before moving onto the runway Wake turbulence delay-when can you waive it Work together to reduce Runway Excursions NEVER taxi on to a runway without visually scanning the final. Controllers do sometimes make mistakes-everyone needs to be vigilant Wake turbulence delays can always be waived EXCEPT when a heavy or B757 aircraft are involved.

7 Phraseology LUAW-Line Up and Wait Cleared for Take Off
N9470N, Boise Tower, RWY 10R LINE UP AND WAIT Line up and wait RWY 10R, N9470N Cleared for Take Off Boise Tower, N9470N, RWY 10R, ready for takeoff N9470N, Boise Tower, RWY 10R, cleared for takeoff, wind calm N9470N, RWY 10R, cleared for takeoff

8 Radar Services VFR Flight Following: WHO WHERE WHAT
Just the Facts! Limit extra verbiage Radar services for VFR- based on workload Don’t get complacent- SEE and AVOID ACTIVELY LISTEN to the frequency For flight following or Radar advisories, keep the initial call simple with enough information for the controller to determine if the service is possible Remember, VFR flight following is based on controller workload Even though you are being provided flight following, you still have a requirement to see and avoid-don’t get complacent By actively listening to the frequency, you can paint a mental picture of what is going on, what the weather and ride conditions might be like for you

9 Phraseology Request for Radar Services:
Boise Approach, Cherokee N9470N, 5 miles west of Nampa, outbound to the practice area N9470N, Boise Approach, squawk 0312 Squawk 0312 N9470N N9470N, radar contact 5 miles west of Nampa, Nampa altimeter 3005, say altitude 5500, N9470N

10 Phraseology Radar services from ARTCC WHO,WHERE,WHAT
Salt Lake Center, N9470N, 10 miles north of U76, request flight following to BYI N9470N, Salt Lake Center, squawk 4321 Squawk 4321, N9470N

11 Airspace Entry requirements: Operating transponder, Mode C, radio, and established communications; the controller must respond to your call with your call sign. Separation requirements- IFR to IFR, standard separation, IFR to VFR -500ft or target resolution

12 Boise Class C

13 Class C Entry Requirements
Operating transponder with Mode C Radio Communications Controller MUST use your call sign No clearance required Operating into/out of Class C without a transponder can be coordinated with ATC

14 Class D

15 Class D Entry Requirements
Operating radio – unless authorized by ATC Establish communications including call sign Watch out- most Class D airspaces revert to Class E after the tower closes Name the one Class D airport WITHOUT an ATCT VUO – Vancouver Pearson 4 miles from PDX

16 VUO

17 Communications Student pilots- let us know
Never leave the frequency without coordination Phraseology requirements for ATC ALL HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS Call sign with your readback Use standard phraseology- that is what ATC is listening for LISTEN to the frequency

18 Arriving at Larger Airports
Wake Turbulence issues Airport signage may not be user- friendly for smaller general aviation aircraft Large, unfamiliar layout, especially at night Close attention must be paid to controller instructions Little time for second clearances If you have questions ---- ASK!!!!

19 After Landing Clear the runway – “dash across the dashes”
Ask for progressive taxi instructions Limit distractions while on any movement area Don’t forget to close your VFR flight plan! Completely exit the runway unless the controller gives alternate instructions If you are unfamiliar with the airport layout, ask for progressive instructions…DON’T GUESS Keep your attention focused when on ANY movement area
