Fall 2014 MAP NWEA Score Comparison Alliance Dr. Olga Mohan High School October 22, 2014

NWEA Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to helping school districts throughout the nation improve learning for all students. NWEA partners with more than 2,200 school districts.

NWEA Assessments NWEA assessments are used to measure students’ progress or growth in school in terms of mathematics, reading, and language usage. The test is taken multiple times a year and shows growth from one year to the next. It is not a test for determining mastery of skills and concepts NWEA’s achievement and growth norms are established by the performance of students at the 50%ile (3 million kids involved in the testing during 2011, the next norming will occur in 2015) We don’t want to talk about what is expected, we instead talking about what is typical (since it is a norm study)

How does the NWEA test work? Each test consists of about 42 to 64 questions. They are adaptive assessments – as the student answers more questions correctly, the questions become more difficult. Conversely, if the student answer more questions incorrectly, the questions become easier. The final score is an estimate of a student’s achievement level expressed as a RIT score. A student's RIT score indicates the level at which the student was answering questions correctly 50% of the time (this helps measures the areas where students need to grow, the teacher still needs to help the student in this area because they are only getting 50% of the questions right, they have not mastered it)

RIT RIT scores indicate a student’s instructional level. The RIT (Rasch UnIT) scale is used to measure student achievement and growth. This scale makes it possible to follow a student’s educational growth from year to year. RIT scores range from about 140 to 300. Students typically start at the 140 to 190 level in 3rd grade and progress to the 240 to 300 level by high school. These scores are grade- and age-independent, though, so if a 3rd grade student earns a 210 on the Reading MAP assessment, and a 8th grader also earns a 210 on the Reading MAP assessment, these two students are at the same instructional level. RIT scores correspond to set of skills and concepts the student is showing he/she is ready to learn “Ready for instruction today”
