2 Grammar Wednesday: Adverbs January 11, 2012 Warm up: Fill in the blanks on the short story about John showing the mood on the slip of paper on your desk. Today’s objective is to identify adverbs that modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs and to use those correctly in sentences. 115

3 Adverbs Modifying Verbs An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or other adverb. When an adverb modifies a verb it often answers the questions How? When? Where? 115

4 Adverbs Modifying Verbs Examples 115 Guests often dine at the White House. When do they dine? Often. The sun disappeared gradually behind the forest of oaks. How did the sun disappear? Gradually. First go straight for one hundred yards; then turn right. When do I go? First. Where do I go? Straight. Where do I turn? Right. When do I turn? Then. Yesterday John was picking his nose in class. When was John picking his nose? Yesterday.

5 Adverbs Modifying Adjectives and Adverbs Adverbs that modify adjectives usually answer how or to what extent. John is an extremely gross boy. (How gross? Extremely.) Adverbs that modify other adverbs add additional information. John picked his nose really intensely. (How intensely? Really.) 115

7 Practice/Homework Complete the practice handout and turn in. Adverb Homework Options Option 1: Write a series of 10 haikus that are about 10 adverbs Option 2: Book Work: p. 160 #1-5 & p. 162 #1-5 Option 3: Write a very short story using at least 5 adverbs that express mood. Then write the same story changing all of the adverbs to show a different mood (like the warm up, but with your own story). 116
