Teaching Offshore John Medlin

Where do I teach Hong Kong UG Business Programs in conjunction with HKBU-SCE Teaching core accounting Been involved since 1999 Student body: TAFE equivalent Dip. Holders or higher. Students all mature age, part time (FT work) and NESB (Cantonese). Malaysia UG Business Programs in conjunction with Taylor’s College Full time students, teaching 12 hours during the day in one week, mixed English ability Singapore APMI Full time students, no visit, local lecturer Part time students, 16 hours over 4 evenings, no local teaching staff

What’s different Internet is useful to localise material if you don’t have a colleague on location Some students read & write English well but cannot speak or listen well Provide a copy of powerpoint slides to minimise need to write Provide formats for the accounting processes so they only have to write in the numbers As teaching at night I try to give them activities to do every 10-15 minutes, e.g. another example of a process, or apply a concept to an issue

Never ask a specific individual to answer a question in front of the class Give a question, warn them I will want a show of hands, give them the opportunity to discuss with class mates, then take vote Occasionally ask a question and see if anyone will offer an answer Usually encourage them to discuss in groups of 2 or 3 while I work the groups to find any common issues If a group has a good answer then I will tell the class and identify the group Use local experiences as teaching examples, e.g. catching the MTR HK students like jokes at my expense Don’t expect to get through as much as in Australia

Powerpoint of family and dog etc. (?) I take my powerpoint on CD, USB and email it to myself before I go I also have a copy of all handouts in electronic form Tend to avoid overhead slides and too many hardcopies as it gets too heavy Always take my teaching material in my hand luggage in case my baggage goes astray

Enjoying the trip See if anyone is familiar with the location, e.g. Stan A for HK, Chris K for KL, Singapore? Get tourist information to familiarise yourself with the location Check who else is going and introduce yourself Get some of the local currency before you go, e.g. arriving HK 2am Try to share taxi rides the first time you go to a new teaching site Dine out with other staff Learn and have fun
