Coaching is the art of facilitating the development, learning and enhanced performance of another “…developing a person’s skills and knowledge so that their job performance improves, hopefully leading to the achievement of organisational objectives. It targets high performance and improvement at work” CIPD, 2005 Coaching is the art of facilitating the development, learning and enhanced performance of another Helping people to take increased personal initiative and responsibility Usually one-to-one and face-to-face Sometimes seen as more ‘job and task’ than personal or career development (mentoring) Empower rather than teach Encourage, question, listen, challenge. It targets high performance and improvement at work”. Focuses on improving performance and developing individuals’ skills. Personal issues may be discussed but the emphasis is on performance at work. People have immense potential And are achieving their own objectives at all times People have good intentions For a Coach:- Try to understand and accommodate people’s own reality and perceptions Assume positive motives (in their mind) Try to understand what benefit they get from current behaviour – it might help identify another approach (leading to same benefit) All behaviour has meaning – what is driving behaviour below the surface (iceberg metaphor) Tools to Assist MBTI Johari
