1. 1 Why do we want new students to become skillful in using library? 2.1 Using the Library The outline of the Nagoya University Library ©2013 名古屋大学附属図書館 12 ★ Guidance points : The Central Library is not the only one library in Nagoya University. Nagoya University Library consists of more than 20 libraries. Medical Library (Tsurumai Campus), Library of Health Science (Daiko Campus) Department libraries There are in total 3,160,000 materials in the whole Nagoya University and 1,200,000 of them are held in the Central Library * Higashiyama Campus Library Map from ”Guide to Nagoya University Central Library”

2.1 Using the Library Is the library a place for … only borrowing books? – studying – group learning, presenting – searching for materials, consulting about studies – using PC, printing out – reading academic papers – using electronic resources (can be accessed also outside of the library) – etc. ※ Student ID is necessary to enter the library or borrow books ★ The points for guidance : The difference of university and high school libraries Not only reading and borrowing books the place of independent learning which takes you one step forward from the stage of ‘arranged study’ Academic papers (articles) are significant *On the arrangements and facilities of Central Library, see “Guide to Nagoya University Central Library” or the “Central Library Tour for New Students” (distributed) 13©2013 Nagoya University Library

2.1 Using the Library: Rules and Manners Before Using the library ・・・ Return the books by due date Use materials, equipment and machines carefully Please be quiet inside the library -Conversation for study is allowed at Learning Commons (2F) -Talking on a cell phone is not allowed except in designated areas Carrying food and uncovered drinks, smoking is prohibited Pay attention to copyright law when copying materials 14 ★ Guidance points : ●Use carefully the property of Library ●Consider others The materials, facilities and equipments are the property of library. The responsibility to keep them in good condition for coming generations is on you Conversation for studies is allowed at Learning Commons (2F) but talking loudly, having conversations other than studies or eating and drinking with uncovered containers are prohibited Prohibition of eating and drinking in the library is not only for the purpose of good manners but also for the protection of materials and facilities Keep the space pleasant for other people too ©2013 Nagoya University Library

2.2 Searching for Books and Journals Holdings in Nagoya University – If there are available – If not available, search where else you can find OPAC = Online Public Access Catalog 15 ★ Guidance points : The place of the book can not be searched by Google! You always can search from your home or satellite laboratory

22©2013 Nagoya University Library 【 (Year) Volume 】 Available volume *Some volumes or issues are lacking! “+” The journal is continuously being subscribed 2.2 Searching for Books and Journals How to read bibliographic and holding information (journals) Make sure to check volumes / years ! ☟ There are two libraries which hold the same journal within Nagoya University, one of them is the Central Library. ★ Guidance Points : Bibliographic information shows the volume number of the first and last issues, etc., under the name of journal. All issues are not necessarily available Check if the number of volume is available by the holding information for each

©2013 名古屋大学附属図書館 2.2 Searching for Books and Journals Japanese : Order of the Japanese syllabary (kana) Non-Japanese : Alphabetical Order The location varies depending on the type of journals and publication year – New arrival magazines: 3F, academic journals and back numbers: 1 st Basement – Some journals are bound after about a year A B Within the same journals, they are arranged by publication years Arrangement of journals ★ Guidance Points : There are no call numbers on journals in Central library. They are arranged by titles New arrival magazines: displayed on 3 th floor Approximately last year numbers and older ones : in B1 in bindings Title Order→Year order→ Order of each volume number Show the articles by turning over the pages

2.3 Finding and obtaining materials Verification and renewal of your borrowed materials →On OPAC screen ©2013 名古屋大学附属図書館 25 Verifying your usage status → Lending list Verifying lending libraries and due dates on the left side of OPAC menu Log in (Nagoya University ID required) Check the books which you want to renew → ※ There are some libraries which can not renew the books from “My Library”

Cautions when you make copies the book cannot be reproduced without copyright holder permission Usage in the library includes an escape clause and may be copied in the following ranges (Copyright Act Article 31 Clause 1) ©2013 Nagoya University Library 26 For the purpose of research and study Partial copy for yourself Do not exceed half of the entire part An article in periodical can be reproduced after the publication of the next issue or 3 months Fill in the application form ※ Copy Machine inside the library is only for copying the library’s materials ! Where, in response to the request of a user of a library, etc. and for the purpose of his research or study, such user is furnished with a single reproduction of (a) a part of a work already made public, or (b) in the case of an individual work reproduced in a periodical already published for a considerable period of time, all of such individual work. 2.3 Finding and obtaining materials The rules of library ★ Guidance points : The rules of respect towards the author of books and articles It is not allowed to copy the latest number of journals or newspapers → Today’s newspaper is not available for copying It is not allowed to make copies of personal materials such as notebooks, resumes of classes inside the library

2.3 Finding and obtaining materials Visit – Bring student ID Obey rules / manner at the visited place – Letter of introduction is sometimes needed (Interlibrary Loan Desk) Previous inquiry is needed sometimes, apply at least one week before you visit Making ILL order – Order at your departmental library or central library ©2013 Nagoya University Library 27 ★ Guidance points : Not so many people are familiar with ILL order Making ILL order to Japanese Universities The library takes charge for, Full payment for the copy One way cost for Book Loan Visiting procedures, making ILL order of copies or books take some time. That is why make your order not before the deadline of reports but at least one week beforehand

33 Books don’t show the ‘Right Answer’ → Judge by yourself Choosing a book The points for choosing : Title, type : textbook, introductory book Imprint : publication year, edition (new/revised) Preface : goal, target ( Is it for learner? ) Contents : Which are the important chapter? Index : Check the terms References, notes: to be read next, original data Author : Viewpoint/other books It is in many libraries and it is used a lot Reading the book It is not necessary to read the book completely. Read the most important parts Read different opinions and compare with yours. 3.3 How to choose and read books ★ Guidance points: Read critically Don’t stick to the first book but compare many Look also the books around it on the shelves It looks old = It may have been used a lot Check what is the good point of the book which you found ©2013 Nagoya University Library

★ The guidance points : Pay attention not only on operation of search but also check how appropriate are the results No results don’t mean no materials.
