VORTEX GENERATOR FOR HYDRO TURBINE KARSON WONG JOHNSON NG SNEHIL RAISINGHANI Senior Project
2
Introduction Vortex generator for a Hydro Turbine Tide Energy Evaluate Initial Design
3
Goal 1. To increase the efficiency of the initial design Hydro Turbine
4
Design Challenges 1. Gulfstream current with average speed of 1 to 3 knots. 2. Vortex generation 3. Design Optimization Number of vortex channels Vortex angles Inlet and outlet curves and lengths Maximize negative pressure between inlet and outlet Rotor foil curves and contours Diffuser slot sizes and spacing
5
Conceptual Design Initial Design Smooth Funnels ж Axial Flow ж No vortex fins
6
Design of The Inlet Funnel Implement vortex streams Velocity increase Flow Rate = Velocity x Area
7
Design For The Outlet Funnel Improve outlet flow Vacuum induction effect
8
Final Conceptual Design Inlet Function Vortex Increase Velocity Outlet Function Vacuum
9
Vortex There are two types of vortices. -Forced vortex -Free vortex The streamlines of the gulf stream follow a straight path.(axial flow) The aim is to create a vortex via the inlet funnel and fins.
10
Velocity Distribution Free VortexForced Vortex
11
Angle of Attack This concept will be used to decide the positioning and contours of the rotor blades, in order to maximize power output.
12
Prototype Scaling In order to successfully design a scaled down prototype, dimensional analysis would have to be performed. Various ratios need to be analyzed.
13
Conclusion Great alternative energy resource Long term goals - To be commercially built - To connect multiple turbines in series to produce more power
