German monk Professor at Wittenberg University Taught the Bible – Upon further study he began to reject the church’s teachings – Believed- human deeds powerless to affect God – “ justification by faith alone”

The straw that broke Luther’s back…. Widespread selling of indulgences upset him – Harmed people’s chance at salvation 95 Thesis on Castle Church in Wittenberg – 1. – 2. Wanted German princes to overthrow papacy and start a reformed church – Three main points-

It’s getting HOT in here…… Church excommunicated Luther 1521 Went before Diet of Worms( ) Charles V tried to help but Luther held fast – * Edict went out that made Luther an outlaw *

Luther’s religious movement became a revolution Gained support from German rulers – Took control of Catholic churches – Formed state churches Lutheranism- first Protestant faith

Luther’s movement was tied to politics Believed state was called by God to maintain order and spread Gospel Charles V wanted to keep all his Catholic holdings under his control- the Hapsburg dynasty – His holdings are beginning to rebel

Charles V and Francis I don’t get along Pope Clement also opposes Charles Francis and Clement join against Charles Charles has to send troops against the Ottoman Empire who sees chance to gain land Many German states support Luther and go against Charles

Peace of Augsburg Charles is forced to make peace or loose his empire so….. 1.He makes peace with Lutheran princes and accepts division of Christianity in Germany 2.All states could choose religion and have same rights 3.Rulers decide state religion not individuals- no tolerance

Questions to Ponder? 1. Why, according to Luther, would buying indulgences interfere with a person’s possibility of salvation? 2. What right that was not recognized by the Peace of Augsburg began to be recognized in the 17 th century and was fully recognized in the U.S. Constitution?

Answers 1. if people thought they could get into Heaven through buying indulgences, they would not attend to the quality of their faith 2. the 1 st amendment- right of individuals to worship according to their consciences
