2
INTRODUCTION Martin Luther King. Jr was born on the 15 th of January 1929, sadly, he died 39 years after on the 4 th of April 1968 after he was assassinated, but that isn’t the point he was unaware that he had a good life ahead of him, and an important one. He was born and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia U.S.A. He was the son of Martin Luther King. His original name was Michael but renamed it in honour of a German reformer, Martin Luther.

WHAT DID HE DO? MARTIN WAS VERY MUCH LIKE NELSON MANDELA, HE CAMPAIGNED FOR ANTI- APARTHEID BUT HE WANTED IT IN AMERICA. HE DID MANY GREAT THINGS LIKE : He joined and led the Montgomery bus boycott He helped found the southern Christian leadership conference He also produced the famous ‘I HAD A DREAM’ speech which attracted many people on TV, there he showed that he was one of the most powerful, most determined public speakers in the whole of American history. These are just a few examples. HE joined a lot more than all of these.

HOW THE PUBLIC REACTED Not very well is the answer. A white man called James Earl Ray shot him after his celebration of winning the Nobel peace prize in 1955.James was sent to prison in 1968.He obviously didn’t like Martin but he was arrested at Heathrow airport. He was guilty and was sentenced for 99 years in jail. Apart from James and a few other people, everyone supported his idea for anti-apartheid and it finally ended in the 1990’s. It was all good luck from there James died in jail at the age of 70 in 1998.
