Hands-Free Submarine Project 1. Each team will be given a standard film canister and be asked to use it to create a submarine that will do the following without assistance from either team member:
2
# The submarine must sink below the water line (5 points). # The submarine must sink to and touch the bottom of the aquarium by itself (10 points). # The submarine must go all the way to the bottom of the tank and actually touch. # The submarine must rise to the surface of the tank again (15 points). # The team that gets their submarine to stay on the bottom of the tank for the longest amount of time will receive an additional reward.

2. The submarine may not be touched in any fashion once it has been placed in the water. Submarines may not be dropped into the water or pushed down to assist the decent. The submarine must not be touched by any person, object, device, utensil, accouterment, thingamabob, or doohickey. The submarine may not be attached to any tubes, strings, wires, or other materials that go outside of the tank. No device requiring electricity will be used within 5 feet of the aquarium in order to maintain safety.
4
3. To the extent possible, materials needed will be provided or a method of procurement discussed. The submarine may not be assisted by electric, solar, or gasoline motors. External heating or cooling devices can only be used if the following criteria are met:
5
キ The device must be tended by the team at all times and be observable for the duration of the attempt. No devices will be allowed to continue to operate once class is over. キ If the device requires electricity, it may not be closer to the aquarium than the prescribed 5 foot distance. キ The device must be inspected by the teacher and judged to be safe prior to use.

4. Your method must not pollute the surrounding water or make it unusable by other teams. This means no residue, particulate matter, color change, cloudiness, surface film or odor can be in, on, under, or surrounding the water as a result of your attempt. This will result in your team doing a thorough cleaning of the tank prior to leaving for the day.
7
5. The film canister and anything attached to it in any way must also fully return to the surface. Anything not returning to the surface will be considered pollution of the water.
8
6. Any member of a team that interferes with any other team by touching, altering, breaking, attempting to break, or damaging their submarine in any way, shape, or form will receive a zero for the day ’ s investigations and be prohibited from participating in the final evaluation which will earn that student a zero. No exceptions. The excuse, “ I was just playing ”, will not mitigate the implementation of consequences.

What You Must Do! Before ANY testing, you must show Mr. Waters your data. The data must include the mass, volume, and density of your submarine and the date of the test. After each test, you must record in your composition book whether the test was a success or a failure
10
7. Each student is allowed up to 3 official trials – an official trial must be conducted in the presence of the teacher for a possible grade. Before any trial, students must submit a completed density sheet and record that density information in his or her composition book. Students will not be allowed to enter the laboratory and conduct trials without that information. Since you are authorized 3 official trials, if you do not pass on the first 2 attempts, you still have a chance to pass. If you pass on your first attempt, you do not have to continue but you may be asked to assist others who are struggling.
