2
Learning Goals: I can label a graph and plot an ordered pair on the Cartesian plane I can divide the Cartesian plane into four quadrants Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph Unit 4: Linear Relations
3
What is a Graph? A Graph is a visual way of showing the relationship between data Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
4
Unit 4: Linear Relations Title Labeled Axis Origin Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
5
Often known as the Cartesian Plane The Origin is the point where the axes intersect. It occurs at (0,0) The Horizontal Axis is the x-axis The Vertical Axis is the y-axis Individual coordinates are called Ordered Pairs. They are written in brackets like this: (Horizontal Value, Vertical Value) or ( x-value, y-value) Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
6
Unit 4: Linear Relations Lets find the values for some of these points: A( ) E() F() H() Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
7
Have you ever played Battleship? Battleship uses coordinates… AKA ordered pairs! Try playing a quick game with your desk partner. Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
8
Draw two grids on graph paper. Mark off a scale from 0 to 10 on both the horizontal and vertical axes. Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
9
On one grid draw four ships. Draw them using only horizontal and vertical lines. Each ship consists of several points joined by a straight line. Aircraft Carrier: 5 points on the grid Destroyer: 4 points on the grid Submarine: 3 points on the grid Battleship: 2 points on the grid Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
11
Take turns calling out pairs of numbers such as (2,3) where 2 is a number on the horizontal axis and 3 is the number on the vertical axis. If you call out a point that lands on one of your opponent’s ships, they must tell you. Record the location of the boat on your second grid, and go again. If you miss your opponent gets the next turn. Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
12
What happens if the data we are graphing has negative numbers? Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
13
We need more quadrants! Unit 4: Linear Relations The quadrant with (+ #, + #) is called quadrant 1 (or I). The quadrant with (- #, + #) is called quadrant 2 (or II). The quadrant with (- #, - #) is called quadrant 3 (or III). The quadrant with (+ #, - #) is called quadrant 4 (or IV). Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
14
Play another game of Battleship, but this time using negative numbers. Draw two grids on graph paper. Mark off a scale from -5 to 5 on both the horizontal and vertical axes. Unit 4: Linear Relations Lesson 1: Understanding the Graph
