Department:Biology Subject:Biology Level:Higher COURSE OUTLINE (Brief outline or list of topics) Three units: The ‘Genetics and Adaptation’ unit covers cell division, genetics, evolution, and adaptations of plants and animals to their surroundings. The ‘Cell Biology’ unit covers respiration, photosynthesis, DNA structure, protein synthesis, viruses and cellular defence. The ‘Control and Regulation’ unit covers the effect of genetics, hormones, chemicals and light on the growth of plants and animals. It also deals with homeostasis and population studies. UNIT ASSESSMENT – DEADLINE DATES Unit 1 Cell Biology – October/November Unit 2 Genetics and Adaptation – January Unit 3 Control and Regulation – End of March There is also a prelim exam in February HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS It is imperative that you stay on top of your work. Homework is set each week. This may take the form of two hours of work to be marked plus one hour reading over work done in class, or two hours learning for a test plus e.g. a data interpretation.
