Data resources for MBC Researchers

Summary: Data uniquely available to Metropolis researchers: a) Longitudinal Immigrant Database (LIDS), crom Citizenship & Immigration Canada [Permanent Resident Data System] - landing records for all immigrants to Canada b) Statistics Canada “core tables” (from Census) c) Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) MUST TYPICALLY WORK THROUGH MBC DATA CO- ORIDINATOR

summary (continued) Data available to Metropolis researchers and to other academic researchers, without usage restrictions a)Census crosstabular tables (sometimes tables 3-deep), via Beyond 20/20 browser -check with your university’s library web site, or data librarian -geography down to Census Metropolitan Area/ Census Agglomeration (approx 140 in Canada) for each Census -sometimes, geography down to Census subdivision (e.g., Vancouver vs. Surrey) -data on major countries of immigration (some countries agglomerated though) b)Simpler tables available directly from Statcan web site c)“Public use” data files for Statcan Surveys (more below) -check with your university’s library web site or data librarian -geography usually very restricted (province, probably not city and probably not even “community size”) -key variables often deleted, including country of immigration (might get Europe/Asia/other distinction or something like this), religion.

example of tabulation possible from Census 2001. Note we could select specific age group &/or gender (tabs top left) Ns are randomly “rounded” to increment of 5

summary (continued) Data available to Metropolis researchers and to other academic researchers, at the Research Data Centres a) Census: 2006, 2001, 1991 (others pending) raw data b) Statistics Canada surveys, typically with Ns of 10,000 or better, raw data You cannot take data out of the RDC. Output is released, but must first be vetted by a Statistics Canada analyst RDC locations: UBC (9-5 + some evenings); UVic (16 hours/week); SFU (16 hours/week); possible future site at UNBC To use the RDC, you must submit a proposal via the SSHRC web site, specifying reason, research questions to be asked, data required (you only get access to the data listed in your proposal). Proposals must have academic merit, but aren’t “competitive” (any proposal with merit is accepted as long as a case for the use of the RDC is established). - The process takes 4-6 weeks after submission of proposal (occasionally, a bit longer) More information: Contact Lee Grenon, BCIRDC, 604 – 822- 0263 (bcirdc@interchange.ubc.ca).bcirdc@interchange.ubc.ca (Doug Baer, Academic Director of the UVic Branch, can also provide some assistance).

Statcan Surveys of interest to immigration researchers: Ethnic Diversity Survey, 2002 Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada (LSIC) wave 1, 6 months, 2001; wave 2, 2003, 2 years; wave 3, 2005, 4 years Labour Force Survey, monthly survey Some General Social Survey “cycles” have questions which might be of interest to immigration researchers (e.g., social engagement) you can generally get codebooks from your university data librarian or data library web site Most “interesting” questions will require Research Data Centre Access due to variables being “censored” on the “public use” files.

See also a master file created by StatsCan (it was a poster at the Metropolis Conference in Calgary this year): copy will be posted at http://web.uvic.ca/~baer/Metropolis

Country of immigration details vary across surveys. EDS, for example, has country codes for every country (though it also coded some “Europe – not specified” if respondents weren’t more specific after a probe). The 2003 General Social Survey, on the other hand, only provided codes for the following countries: 01 China 0 0 02 England 0 0 03 France 0 0 04 Germany 0 0 05 Greece 0 0 06 Guyana 0 0 07 Hong Kong 0 0 08 India 0 0 09 Italy 0 0 10 Jamaica 0 0 11 Netherlands 0 0 12 Philippines 0 0 13 Poland 0 0 14 Portugal 0 0 15 Scotland 0 0 16 United States 0 0 17 Vietnam 0 0 18 Other 0 0 (StatCan has agreed to provide some more specific country codes in the next version of the “Social Engagement” cycle survey [2008, to be released soon]).

More recent data subject to finalization of MOU with CIC

Access to LIDS data under an agreement with CIC, any Metropolis user who wants to gain direct access to LIDS data must sign an agreement with CIC – these agreements are “co-ordinated” with the Data Committee Chairs (at MBC, contact Doug Baer) some delay: finalized version of the agreement template is still pending

Access to LIDS data general restrictions: – one year only (must renew if continued access required) – signed agreement – must agree to keep data in encrypted form – must agree to data release restrictions (e.g., minimum N for each cell in a table)

Access to LIDS data An alternative: Have analysis done by Data Co-ordinator, who will release tables to you. Pro:- No need to sign direct agreement with CIC - Faster initial access to data Con:- Can’t look at data interactively - At certain times when Data Co-ordinator busy or out of town, could experience delays of at least a few working days, maybe longer EACH Metropolis Centre Data Co-ordinator will sign an agreement with CIC under which he/she gets raw LIDS data for purposes of further dissemination to Metropolis researchers (in the form of tables, statistical output). contact:Doug Baer (Sociology, Uvic) Ph: 250-721-7581baer@uvic.ca
