2 A Region of Cities  Northeast is a Megalopolis- cities and suburbs have grown so close together to form One Big Urban Area.  Suburbs: mostly residential areas on the outer edges of a city. People commute to work.  The Northeast’s economy its based on its cities.

3 NE Population  NE is the most densely populated region of the US.  Population Density- the average # of people per square mile.  Boston- Washington D.C.= about 50 million people

4 StatesCapitals Maine, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey.  Albany,  Trenton,  Harrisburg,  Montpelier,  Boston,  Hartford,  Augusta,  Concord,  Providence

5 Boston  The city where the American Revolution began. At concord.  Many colleges and universities (Harvard, MIT)  Leading medical schools and hospitals  Medical, science, and technology centers  Universities and scientific companies work together on research and design

6 Philadelphia  Its consider the “the Cradle of the Nation”  It was once the Capital of our country  America’s founders wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

7 Philadelphia  In the 1700s leading political, financial, and commercial city in the nation and shipping center.  Transportation center for ships, trucks and trains.  Factories process food, refine petroleum, and manufacture chemicals from raw materials.

8 New York City  The wealthiest and most influential city.  Largest city in the US, one of the 10 largest in the world. (over 8 million)  “Money Capital”- Wall Street, New York Stock Exchange  Center for fashion, advertising, publishing, TV and the Arts, including plays and musicals.

12 Regional Profile  Climate: Humid Continental  Terrain: Hilly, mountainous  Economy: Agriculture- vegetables, wheat, maple syrup  Industry: planes, cars, finance, chemicals, wood products.

13 Few Natural Resources  Small farms- rocky soil  Coal- Penn.  Water- most valuable, fishing industry, trade and transportation
