The Zuider Zee Project and the North-East Polder The North-East Polder 1.Covers almost 48,000 hectares 2.Its main town is Emmeloord – situated in the centre of the Polder 3.Smaller villages developed around it 4.All linked by rail and road

The Randstad and overspill towns The cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague and Utrecht make up the Randstad “Conurbation” Note – Conurbation = a collection of cities growing into each other to form one massive city

Problems Conurbations suffer 1.Traffic Congestion 2.Lack of open space 3.Poor air quality 4.Rapidly growing populations

Overspill Towns Overspill towns = “planned towns specifically built to house migrants from increasingly overcrowded cities” 1.Overspill towns where built on the Polders to absorb the growing population of the Randstad

The Functions of Nucleated Settlement 1.Villages - provide small range of services - 2.Market towns - Wider range of services eg banks, supermarkets 3.Defensive towns – Begun as defensive settlements – usually have a castle or ruins 4.Resource-based settlements – based around the exploitation of a natural resource ie coal 5.Ecclesiastical settlement – towns with a religious function i.e. Knock 6.Recreational settlement – A town that provides leisure services for tourists 7.Dormitory Settlements – People live here but work in a larger city.

Limerick City – Case study Limerick is an early Viking settlement 1.Limerick grew as a bridge point – At the lowest bridge point on the Shannon 2.It is a route focus – Grew as Market Town – its port facilities has helped this. 3.Limerick is Multi-Functional Residential Shannon Airport – jobs Educational – University Health – Regional Hospital
