1. EGER The town of wine and grapes

2. EGER Eger is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary. Situated in the northeast, the town is rich in historic monuments and famous for its wines and medicinal waters.

3. The Líceum In Eszterházy square you can see the building of the Líceum, which was built in late baroque style. The building is a college today. On the first level of the building you can visit the Library of the Bishopric, which is well known all over the country. The tower of the building is the home of the Astronomical Museum with a famous telescope.

4. The Cathedral Opposite the Líceum we can find the only building built in classicist style in Eger. The Basilica (Cathedral) is the second biggest church in Hungary. It was built between 1831 and 1838 based on the plans of József Hild by the order of archbishop Pyrker.

5. The Archbishop's Garden The park with its 22 acres was built during the reign of bishop Eszterházy. The fountain that you can see in the middle of the park was inaugurated in 2000. The park, having elements of the traditional French park building, has been a public park since 1919. In its southwest section there is a stadium, a football field and several tennis courts.

6. The Thermal Bath The open-air swimming pool has six open or semi open pools for its guests. The town was declared to be an important health resort in 1976. Next to the thermal bath we can find the Turkish bath. Its water is good to cure different diseases.

7. The Castle Inside the castle the underground catacombs, the Room of Heroes, the Picture Gallery, the Ruin Garden, the Museum of the History of the Castle and the Waxworks exhibitions can be found. In the eastern part of the castle is the grave of Géza Gárdonyi, the writer of the famous book ‘The Stars of Eger’ about the Turkish attack in 1552.

8. The Minaret is the most northern monument in Europe from the age of the Turks. A few hundred years ago there were about a dozen towers like that in Eger. The building is 40 metres high. There are 97 steps inside that lead you to the round balcony on the top. The Minaret

9. Dobó Square is the central part of Eger with lots of restaurants and shops around. The Statue of István Dobó, the heroic captain of the castle in the Turkish attack in 1552, erects in the centre of the square. In front of the Town Hall is the statue of the heroes of 1552. Dobó Square

10. Minorite Church One of the nicest church of Central Europe, the baroque style Minorite church with its unique interior can also be seen in Dobó square.

11. The Greek or Serbian church is at the end of Szécheny street on top of a small hill. The church has very special atmosphere. RácChurchRácChurch

12. There are almost two hundred cellars here that are closely related to the reputation of the famous wines of Eger. Many legends exist connected to the valley. Some say that the valley was named after a lady of a noble house. The Valley of the Beautiful Woman
