5 Grooming – Top Tips Talk to your child about online grooming Talk to them about their online friends Let your child know that you are always there for support and you understand how easy it is for things to get out of control online Learn how to report any inappropriate contact made to your child online

7 What does the ‘inappropriate’ mean in your house? Not age appropriate:  Violence  Racial Hate  Pro eating disorders  Gambling  Pornographic

8 Parental Controls Set controls on:  Computers  Laptops  Tablets  Mobile devices  Games Consoles  ALL internet enabled devices Remember… they are not 100% accurate and not a substitute for open communication! Set on all devices that link to the internet

9 Parental controls  Block sites that are not age appropriate  limit inappropriate and illegal material  Set timings – automatic switch off at bedtime  Monitor activity  What do young people think... How can they help?

10 Authoritative parenting Parents who: Set rules and boundaries Have high expectations and offer high levels of support Warm and nurturing Use measured and consistent punishment  Raise children who are more likely to:  Be more resilient online  Self-regulate  Come to their parents with issues  Authoritative parents are confident in their boundaries and support

11 ?  What is personal information – what can and can’t they share, and who with? And importantly Why?  Can they play online games with friends/with other people?  What are their favourite websites and why?  If they want to use a new website find out about it  What should they do if something goes wrong?  How do you expect them to behave online, what are the ramifications if they don’t behave as you expect them to?  What you want to ensure you know is Who, What and Where. Boundaries/conversations
