Respiratory System
2
Bring oxygen into body & remove carbon dioxide and other gaseous wastes Gas exchange = respiration Interacts w/ circulatory system O 2 moves from alveoli and capillary membranes into bloodstream CO 2 moves into lungs from bloodstream
3
Organs Upper respiratory tract: - nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, & pharynx -Nose – bone & cartilage; tiny hairs inside nostrils to prevent large particles from entering -Nasal cavity – behind nose; hollow -Pharynx – (throat) – supports production of sound & speech; bridges mouth and esophagus
4
Lower respiratory tract: - larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs Larynx – made of muscle and tissue; below pharynx - allows air to move in/out of trachea, reduces risk of toxics entering lungs - house vocal cords - glottis & epiglottis – allow food and liquids to pass thru larynx w/o entering trachea and air passages
5
Trachea – long, narrow tube; larynx to bronchi - lined w/ mucous-coated cilia – traps unwanted particles & moves them up into pharynx to be swallowed Bronchi – 2 large tubes; air moves in from trachea; leads to lung
6
Alveoli – tiny air sacs at end of bronchi; lined w/ capillaries Gas exchange b/t alveoli & capillaries
7
Lungs – - Right – 3 lobes; larger - Left – 2 lobes; smaller Contains air passageways, alveoli, blood vessels, and nerves
