Areas of Development Social:Process of learning to interact with others & express oneself – Sharing, Manners, Respect Emotional: Learning to express feelings & establishing an identity – Separation Anxiety, Empathy Intellectual:Understanding & interpreting the world Talking, Playing Peek-a-Boo, Cause & Effect Physical: All development follows 3 general patterns 1. head to foot(lift head before standing) 2. near to far (starts at core moves outward) 3. simple to complex (eating w/finger to using a spoon) http://now.msn.com/living/0422-from-birth-to-twelve.aspx

Characteristics of Development Development is similar for everyone ie: babies stand before they walk Development builds on earlier learning ie: learning to walk before they learn to run Development proceeds at an individual rate ie: some children learn to talk early, but all will start talking (usually by age 3+) Development is interrelated ie: social development interacts with all other areas, for example a child who learns to talk has more opportunity to express themselves and make friends Development is continuous throughout life

Ages & Stages Project “My Favorite Age” group project 1) Using the textbook, complete the A&S group notes. Everyone(15 points) 2) Presentation and bring an age appropriate child/video to class Everyone(25 points) 3) Create a brochure from the notes which incorporates the Main Points from each of the age groups. 3 people(30 points) 4) Poster3 people (30 points)

Favorite Age Presentation Each group will present what they learned about their “Favorite Age” to the class using the main points from each of the assigned areas of development. The Brochure & Poster should cover the things you want to teach the class in a way that it is easy to take notes from. 20 minute presentation: Each group has 10 minutes to present your “Favorite Age” brochure and poster and another 10 minutes to observe/ask questions of child/parent or show video clip of appropriate child. –Provide a list of 10 questions for students to ask (child or guest) OR The important points to look for in your video clip –Copy & give out on the day of the presentation. Type up as a ½ sheet (2 per page) & emailed to me and if you want me to print them. Poster of your “Favorite Age” with pictures and interesting facts 1) Picture of a child at that age 2) Toys/Play Materials –Pictures & why appropriate 3) 4 Milestones for ALL Areas of Development include examples *Type up (large font) *Mount the info/pictures on large poster paper and staple up on bulletin board
