Planning Across the Curriculum: NDNU’s Story Dr. Kelly Vaughn and Dr. Stephanie Demaree

ESAs: What They Are Embedded Signature Assessments (ESAs): “Form the local component of the PACT assessment system alongside the Teaching Event, which is standardized across programs.” “Offer programs an opportunity to reflect their local program emphases and values.” “Were envisioned as being embedded into one or more courses. Many programs identified what they considered to be major key assignments within their program, and developed them into ESAs.” “The difference between ESAs and many classroom assignments is that the ESAs have more formalized scoring criteria that are [or could be] used by more than one person.” Excerpted from PACT Website, http://www.pacttpa.org/_main/hub.php?pageName=Embedded_Signature_Assessments_%28ESAs%29, harvested December 20, 2011.http://www.pacttpa.org/_main/hub.php?pageName=Embedded_Signature_Assessments_%28ESAs%29

create a visual/flow chart of 4339 instruction activity to show what we mean by addressing PIARL through a course activity, not an ESA

Persistent Student PACT Errors: Could ESA and PIARL Expansion/Revision help? Planning Difficulty planning a cumulative, multiday sequence Instruction Poor Video choices that don’t show effective candidate/ student interactions Assessment - Mismatches between learning targets and assessment methods (ex: assessing “analysis” with a fill-in quiz) - Poor grasp/execution of rubrics - Poor choice of comments/feedback on student work Reflection Difficulty relating classroom work to theory, research Academic Language Plans and commentary consistently refer only to vocabulary words taught

Sample PIARL Activity This sample activity is not an ESA, but a course assignment that already exists supporting PIARL From: Science and Social Studies Methods What: Instruction Video Activity Watch 20 minute video clip of science teacher in 1 st grade classroom Make note of evidence to support how well the teacher: 1. Engages students in learning AND 2. Monitors student learning during instruction Discuss evidence and mock score

Small Group Work Based on what you have heard in this presentation, which courses in your program might benefit the Planning Across the Curriculum/PIARL model? Where is your faculty now in terms of PACT support– how accepting would faculty be of this type of analysis and implementation? How familiar are they with each others courses? Reflect on your program now– What would it take to get to the next step? Consider changes and how you and your colleagues might implement changes with the goal of supporting STs in good teaching and learning which has the consequence of supporting their PACT experience.
