2 Highlights Five colleges comprise the Lone Star College System, each with an Alternative Teacher Certification Program. The Lone Star College System has a 1,400 square-mile service area across North Harris and Montgomery Counties. Over 3,000 teachers have completed Texas K-12 standard teacher certification through the LSCS Alternative Teacher Certification Programs.

5 Do I qualify for ATCP? The five basic requirements are: –Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree –Complete an Educator Preparation Program –Pass Appropriate Certification Exams –Submit a State Application for certification –Complete SBEC requirements for Fingerprinting and Background Check –http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=535 2&menu_id=865&menu_id2=794http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=535 2&menu_id=865&menu_id2=794

6 Do I qualify for ATCP? Have completed at least a bachelors degree from an accredited U.S. institution –Official, sealed copies of transcripts required –Evaluations of transcripts from outside the U.S. must state “equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree” www.naces.orgwww.naces.org GPA >= 2.5 overall, or on last 60 hours –Limited exceptions may be allowed

7 Do I qualify for ATCP? Speak and understand the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in conversation and teaching Have acceptable scores on skills testing in reading, written communication and mathematics within the last 5 years Have not taught for three years in Texas on a non-standard teaching certificate

Algebra 63 SAT combined 1070, minimum 500 per section ACT combined 23, minimum 19 per section GRE Quantitative 450, Verbal 450, Writing 4.0 COMPASS-ESL Level 4, Score Range 259-284 TOEFL 61 on TOEFL-iBT Speaking 26 Scores within five years of program admittance. * THEA Math 270 for Math 8-12 Applicants

10 Interview Written and Oral interviews in group or personal sessions Presentation (may be required) Sample topics –Educational background –Work history –Experience with children –Teacher who inspired you Onsite, Written essay (may be required)

11 What can I teach? ‘Highly Qualified’ status is determined by –Credit coursework Content specific areas require 24 hours/12 upper division –Pre-Admission Content Testing (PACT) In lieu of coursework, to demonstrate content proficiency http://www.texes.ets.org/epp/epppact/ Educator Preparation Programs may accept PACT Preparation manuals available at http://www.texes.ets.org/http://www.texes.ets.org/ –Generalists EC-6 or 4-8 are ‘Highly Qualified’ only by passing the content exam For program admittance, 9 hours in each core area required
