2 Overview What is Lenus about? What is the vision for Lenus? How does the HSE’s OA policy complement Lenus?

3 What is Lenus? Lenus is an online repository set up to make research & grey literature in healthcare in Ireland more easily accessible. to become the primary online resource for information relating to the Irish health services. Our commitment is to preserve, maintain and make freely available for research purposes, policy & research from authors and health agencies on the island of Ireland to the global community. Lenus’ vision is to support Open Access research in Irish health by developing a single access point and repository for Irish health literature and research.

4 Background 2005 HSE established and former health boards abolished 2006 HSE Libraries Online & IHPA launched 2007-2008 Project Plan to implement Lenus 2009 Lenus launched

5 Repository Rationale Health services in Ireland o Diverse (130 organisations) o Knowledge intensive sector Dissemination & availability of Irish research key to evidence-based practice’ Grey literature important source of evidence for public health (Ogilvie, Dobbins, Franks) No central system for collection, dissemination or preservation of Irish health literature existed.

6 Content criteria Content accepted in Lenus meets the following criteria: The information is in the public domain Peer-reviewed research The information has a focus on healthcare The information is being submitted on behalf of an organisation(s) or author(s) with their permission.

20 Issues and Resolutions Health research matters but awareness of OA & Lenus is low. Survey 2012 (n=450) o 25.3% of respondents had never heard of Lenus. o 46% had never heard of Open access publishing Self deposit low Lack of authority control for subjects, author names (?) How is this being resolved? Advisory Group set up in the HSE National Steering Committee for Open Access established Local events at hospitals and communication (Clinical Program)
