Kinds of measurement The basic units of measurement are distance, volume, mass, time and temperature.

Temperature

‘critical range of temperature’ Temperature

All living things require their own unique certain range of body temperature for optimal living conditions. Temperature

Chemical reactions occur in living things as well as outside of living things. Most chemical reactions require certain conditions in order to occur. Some chemical reactions need heat to occur. These endothermic reactions leave the products cold to our touch. Temperature

Other chemical reactions release heat when occurring. These exothermic reactions give off energy that had been stored in the bonds of the reactants. The energy could be light and/or heat and possibly sound as a byproduct. Temperature

Time can be measured in: Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millions of years, billions of years

Volume (Space taken up) Volume can be measured in two ways, depending on whether the object being measured is regular in shape or irregular in shape. Volume

Large, irregular shapes still have a certain volume that is measured in cubic feet or cubic meters. Volume

Volume can simply be length x width x height Volume

Hot air balloons measure the volume of air as cubic feet.. Volume

Parts per million (ppm) Parts per billion (ppb) comparisons

One million pennies stacked closely together, compared to an average man. 1,000,000 pennies 1,000,000,000 pennies A billion pennies

1,000,000,000,000 pennies a trillion pennies stacked

What’s the difference between weight and mass? Mass

Mass is the same throughout the universe. Weight depends on gravity and mass. Mass

The large planets have a stronger pull of gravity. The smaller planets have a weaker pull of gravity. Mass

Weight depends on gravity and mass. Mass

Mass is a comparison of something to an International standard. Mass

Scales of all sorts are used to determine mass. Mass

In the course, Biology, the term biomass is used very often. Bio- (life) –mass (weight-like) examines the amount of materials that are currently alive or had been previously alive. Mass

All the plants of a forest could actually be removed, dried and massed from the forest. Mass

All the vegetarians of the forest could be removed, killed, dried and massed from the forest. Biologists often want to know the plant mass to animal ratio on a piece of property. Mass
