4. Headers and Footers HEADER FOOTER
Headers can include text and graphics that print at the top of the page.
In Microsoft Word, headers print ½ inch from the top of the page. Margins are 1 inch.
In an MLA Style Report, the header consists of the writer’s last name and the page number, which is included on each page.
FOOTER
Footers can include text and graphics that print at the bottom of the page.
In Microsoft Word, footers print ½ inch from the bottom of the page.

5. Typing the Research Paper Text
Write the first draft, referencing sources.
Include an introduction, body, and conclusion.
Evaluate sources for authority, currency, and accuracy.
Acknowledge all sources of information; do not plagiarize.

6. Plagiarism
to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
to use (another's production) without crediting the source
to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
A synonym for ethics would be standards. It is unethical and would be considered an academic crime to plagiarize.

10. Indents and Normal Style
First-line indents occur when you drag the first triangle on the left side of the ruler. This indents the first line of text on the left side only.
Hanging indents occur when you drag the 2nd triangle on the left side of the ruler. This indents the 2nd and succeeding lines of text on the left side of the paragraph and leaves the first line at the left margin (the left indent moves with the 2nd triangle when a hanging indent occurs).
Left indents occur when you drag the rectangle on the left side of the ruler. This indents all lines of text on the left side of the paragraph (both triangles and the rectangle moves when dragging the left indent).
Right indents occur when you drag the triangle on the right side of the ruler. This indents all lines of text on the right side of the paragraph.
In an MLA Style Report, paragraphs are first-line indented ½ inch and the Works Cited Page, the works are hanging indented ½ inch.
Default normal style places 10 points of blank space after each paragraph.
Default normal style inserts a vertical space equal to 1.15 lines between each line of text.

11. Sources
MLA style requires that the works cited be listed in alphabetical order by the author’s last name, or if the work has no author, by the work’s title.
