Speed Reading Principles Always use a pacer Use soft focus peripheral vision Take in 3 to 6 words at a time Right, left, up, down Pass multiple times through your readings Integrate a right-brain note-taking method Read/learn in a relaxed state Relax, have fun, and be excited and engaged in your learning!
5
More Principles Permit your ‘head’ to gently move - left-center-right across the sentence. Continue this technique down the page. Feel as-if your eyes are ‘floating’ across the words of each sentences following your pacer and down the slippery-slope of each paragraph. Practice your ‘sweeping-flow’ physically. Read for ideas, thoughts, and meaning – not individual words. When you read holistically, you become a master of the ‘context’ of the paragraphs. Use an Association Matrix or other right-brained method to record the ‘gist’ of what the writer’s main ideas and salient details. Fill in your summary-sheet for review and long-term memory recall.
6
There will come a time when you may not need a pacer any more Great Speed readers go into learning mode, and their eyes automatically use the correct strategies – without a pacer. The secret is trusting yourself to first train your eyes, second, give up Fear of Change and third, give yourself permission to use speed reading strategies in place of reading slow.

Test Taking Taking an exam with questions and material to examine, like an SAT or MCAT or an open-book test First, Overview the entire test and questions (Z) See what you can answer from the skim. What is Comprehension? Comprehension is understanding what you are reading while you are reading it. A reader knows intuitively whether or not they have experienced comprehension. If comprehension is taking place, the story or data being read will "feel" like it is making sense. The reader can anticipate the process under discussion and experience the train of thought. Comprehension will differ between individuals since it is dependent upon the various meanings they have formally attached to words.
10
Comprehension It is the sum of the thoughts one generates in response to the words or symbols on a page. The more information you have stored in your brain, the better the material will be understood. When we can put the material we are reading into a familiar context because of something we already know or have experienced, then we have created an association and comprehension is heightened. In other words, the experience of comprehension and understanding is recognized through thinking. And this thinking is done while you are reading.
