2 Define Hook/(Attention Grabber)
First sentence of an essay. Used to draw the reader in to what you have to say.

3 List 5 Strategies for Writing a Hook:

4 Define Anecdote: a brief story about something interesting or funny in a person's life

5 Sample Anecdote My sons are very tall. When my oldest boy was getting taller and taller, people always asked him, "Do you play basketball?" He would answer, "Why? Do you play miniature golf?" He stopped saying that when he decided it was a smart aleck thing to say. To this day when little kids ask him how he got so tall he says, "I always ate all my vegetables."

7 Define Allusion A reference or comparison in literature to a well-known element, such as: Person Place Historical Event The Bible Work of Art Mythology TV/Movie Etc.

The use of vivid, descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the five senses. (taste, touch, smell, sound, sight)

(words that give more info about the infinitive)

10 How can an infinitive function in a sentence?

11 Underline the infinitive in each sentence and determine its function.
To sleep is the only thing Eli wants after his double shift waiting tables at the neighborhood café. Function: Wherever Melissa goes, she always brings a book to read in case she has a long wait. 12 Define Denotation The dictionary definition of a word.

13 Define Connotation: The feelings or emotions associated with a word. Positive Connotation: inquisitive Negative Connotation: nosey

14 Define Tone: The author or narrator’s attitude toward the writing.

15 Define Mood: the general atmosphere created by the author’s words; the feeling the reader gets from reading those words

16 Three Types of Irony Situation Irony: When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Verbal Irony: A character says one thing but means the opposite. (Sarcasm) Dramatic Irony: When the reader understands more about the events of a story than a character.

17 Define Suspense: Being uncertain or anxious about what will happen next
