Flipped Classrooms
2
Three Students Helen – struggler Janet – sporty Ashley – “the player” (Value of learning ?) Personalise for 150 students + ?? Assembly line education! ? Shot gun approach – to middle
3
Rationale Push students through the system – why ? Advanced learning – accelerated learning? Teacher focus of attention ? Talking at kids ? “YOU are responsible for teaching ME! / I am responsible for what I learn or refuse to learn!” Students brains ! Life lessons – what do we do to learn ? - empowering Real differentiation Tests and poor performance Points for improvement …… but ……. Is each student learning ? Boring some, other getting lost Bloom – present educational system where the brightest are rewarded – anyone can master anything if given the time and the support! “80% … important content / 20% traditional method” Immediate marking – points for improvement – regular interaction on a lesson by lesson basis Opportunities to relearn and remediate – conversation rather than dissemination – listening to them Increase teaching time Parents can help students ! What is best for the kids ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a7NbUIr_iQ#t=16 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRvmjjeZ9CA#t=33

How to flip ? Is everyone flipping ? – One size does not fit all Homework becomes learning – take notes – videos etc – assessment – traditional homework at home (no homework?) Lesson starters ? Tutorial role – “The teacher must be able to relinquish control of the learning process to the students. Control freaks need not apply.” Classroom activities – move on No more performance – interaction Solution guides – motivation A method of proof (assessment) – don’t move on without a solid grasp of the essential objectives Objective ? Do we know how to get there ? Mastery program ? Plan the next step for learning – based on teacher – this based on students – no penalisation – no going back – asynchronous

Anecdote “I stayed busy interacting one-on-on; working with kids that I never had time for before, really getting to know my kids. It is just that the burden of learning had traded hands. And you know, really, it had to be passed on. I can’t force someone to learn – they have to accept that responsibility for themselves. This method allows them to clearly see that – and gives them a structured environment that ensures success.” “This is the best learning experience I have had” My experience thus far – We had to work a lot this lesson! – learning something deeply is a lot of work, not simply get by but to thrive I love this way of learning / teaching – I get a lot more out of it – I like Spanish better this year My daughter has told me about this radical approach – she seems to be liking it.
6
Today’s language Technology – what the students use and what they are familiar with Own electronic devices (BYOD) Technology for its sake ? (extended learning – anecdote) Record live lessons ? 15 minutes +/- rule Before the best and brightest – strugglers Rewind your teacher.
7
Technology How to gauge attainment? Quiz module in Moodle Audio Boo MP3s Screen-cast-o-matic Quizlet Educannon
8
Additional Time What to do? Extended oral – time at end Research and presentation Access to more authentic material Story writing – time at end PBL
9
Don’t make me Fly When I can’t walk!
10
Problems - FAQs How to do so much with so many students – “Frankly, this is our struggle.” Technology ? Don’t buy in – “we wish we had a silver bullet to solve all the problems of education.”
