May 26, 2011Secondary Mirror Handling Internal Review7 Overall Objectives of Telescope Mirror Handling Reviews To Ensure Safe Handling of Keck Telescope Mirrors (Primary segments, tertiary and secondary mirrors): Personnel safety Optics and equipment safety and optical throughput: Primary mirror axial and radial support cracks are propagating - We have minimized handling impact and mitigated medium to high catastrophic risks Tertiary mirrors are vital to each telescope Secondary mirrors are essential for nightly operations

May 26, 2011Secondary Mirror Handling Internal Review8 Overall Objectives of Secondary Mirror Handling Review To review Keck’s telescope secondary mirror handling practices (encompassing procedures, personnel resources, tooling and equipment) to identify areas where moderate to high risk to personnel, telescope optics and equipment safety are being encountered, and to provide recommendations to mitigate these risks.

Where moderate to high risks to personnel, telescope optics and equipment safety have been or have a high probability of being encountered. To determine specific changes to our existing secondary mirror handling practices proposed for implementation prior to the on-site handling review and recoating.
