Chemical Fume Hood A type of local ventilation device that is designed to limit the user's exposure to hazardous or noxious fumes, vapors or dusts.
3
Components of a Chemical Fume Hood Utilities Sash Duct Work Air Flow Monitor Air Foil Light
4
Components of a Chemical Fume Hood Sash Adjustable – position low enough to allow arms free movement to perform work Safety glass – protect against splashes and minor impacts Air Foil Do not block, it provides air flow across the bottom of the fume hood
5
Components of a Chemical Fume Hood Air Flow Monitor- Monitors velocity of air in the fume hood and warns of unsafe conditions (low flow or high sash) Ductwork- Air is exhausted out of the lab through ductwork Utilities- Air, gas, water, or vacuum may be available
6
Chemical Fume Hood Safe Work Practices 1. Consult chemical MSDS Consult chemical MSDS 2. Check the air flow monitor reading Check the air flow monitor reading 3. Operate sash at proper height Operate sash at proper height 4. Do not use as a storage cabinet Do not use as a storage cabinet 5. Wear appropriate PPE Wear appropriate PPE 6. Help PSU conserve energy Help PSU conserve energy

Fume hoods exhaust large volumes of air Exhausted air must be replaced by fresh air from outside Electricity used to cool air (summer), power fans Natural gas used to heat air (winter) Humidity adjustment may require both cooling and heating Hoods: lower sash = less air exhausted = less energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions HIGH ENERGY DEMAND
